About
Meet Amy Derck
Author of The Nancy Sisters and the Glacier Valley novels.
Hello, and welcome
Why I write
I write women’s fiction about friendship, family and the courage it takes to be true to yourself. My stories follow Annie, Irene and Natalie, three girls born in 1948 in Glacier Valley, Ohio, a town I created at the edge of the old glacier’s path.
We meet them as girls who start a detective club after reading Nancy Drew, and we follow them into college, careers, family and love through the late 1950s, the 1960s and the early 1970s, with plenty of the music of the time along the way.
Two ideas run through every book: be true to yourself, and the truth will set you free.
Why the sea
From Glacier Valley to Emerald Isle
The sea runs through the whole series. It plays a major role in Annie’s story, Breath of the Sea, set at Emerald Isle, North Carolina. It comes into play again in the Charleston area in Irene’s story, Indigo, and the third book ends back at Emerald Isle.
That is why you’ll see so much of the ocean on this site.
Before fiction
Twenty years as a caregiver
When my husband was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2004, I became his caregiver, and for more than 20 years I learned firsthand what caregiving asks of you. That journey became my first book, Coming Home to Yourself: Care for the Caregivers, and years of encouraging other caregivers through coaching, classes and speaking.

Get early-bird notes from The Nancy Sisters before the novella begins in January. Meet the parents, Judge Carson and other friendly folks who live in Glacier Valley before the books are released in spring and summer 2027. George Pierson and his wife, Peggy, owners of The Depot, might even share Peggy’s famous recipe for the Nancy Sisters’ favorite dessert, Lemon Freeze. Maybe a few war stories from Frank, or some town gossip from the attorneys who meet for breakfast every morning at The Depot.
